Changemakers who wouldn’t have voted for trump…
As the election results are finalized and Donald Trump has now been voted to be the 47th President, I sit here in awe. I think about the people who have made such positive impacts in this world like Mahatma Gandhi, Martin Luther King Jr., Jane Goodall, Nelson Mandela, Ruth Bader Ginsburg, Princess Diana, even Jesus Christ. None of them, I believe, would have voted for Trump.
You may disagree, but when I think of these people I think of kindness and peace, ethics and logic, compassion and love, and justice for the oppressed — when nearly half of the country and most of the world look at our now President, they don’t see those characteristics.
I’m not here to bash Trump or spit on Republicans. I consider myself to be a moderate in some regards, as I appreciate the stability and value of a strong mixed economy in the U.S. — capitalism allows people to build themselves up from nothing, and the socialist aspect (in theory) gives people solid ground to stand on (though this system is horrifically flawed), as well as the idea that our borders need to be regulated to keep threats out (not scared families looking for a better life). But when it comes to human rights and dignity I am a Democrat through and through — a voter of kindness and compassion (though many people will argue that the right has more of both).
I cast my vote based on the future — the future of the world from an environmental standpoint, the future of equality and hope for minorities in this country, my future children that I hope to have (and if I have complications like a miscarriage during my pregnancy like over one million women each year — 1 in 4 pregnancies — I want to survive and be taken care of so that once my heart has healed I can try again for another miracle).
The odds were stacked against Harris — as were true for all the influential people listed above — but it’s never been an easy feat to change the course of history. So, we will not stop or give up or falter in our quest to positively change the world. And maybe she’s not the person to change this part of history, but she sure as hell was a good catalyst.
